Christmas and New Year Service Arrangements 2019/20

ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ Council offices in Ebbw Vale and Abertillery will be closed from 12noon on Tuesday, 24th December 2019 and will re-open on Thursday, 2nd January 2020.

Customer Services

C2BG (the Council’s Contact Centre) will be closed from 12noon on Tuesday, 24th December 2019 and will re-open on Thursday, 2nd January 2020 at 8am.

The Emergency out-of-hours service can be contacted on the usual number of 01495 311556 during this period. The Piper Alarm service will also continue to operate. Enquiries regarding Piper lifeline alarms out of office hours should be directed to 0845 056 8035. Calls to this number cost 5p per minute plus your telephone company’s Access Charge.

Social Services Duty Team

The Duty Team Office will be closed from 12noon on Tuesday, 24th December 2019 and will re-open on Thursday, 2nd January 2020 at 9am.

During the Christmas period please contact the Emergency Duty Team for Social Services on 0800 328 44 32.

Please note the Registrar Office will be closed to order duplicate/historic certificates from Monday, 23rd December 2019 until Thursday, 2nd January 2020.

Cash Desk & Payments

Benefits Customer Services will be open on Tuesday, 24th December from 9am to 12noon and the cash desk will be open from 8.30am to midday. Both will then be closed until Thursday, 2nd January 2020. Benefits will reopen at 9am and the cash desk will reopen at 8.30am.

For anyone wishing to make a payment between these dates the 24-hour automated payment line is available on 0845 604 2635 or payments can be made via the ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ website. Calls to this number cost 5p per minute plus your telephone company’s Access Charge.

Community Options & Day Services

Community Options (Day Services) will open as normal on Tuesday, 24th December 2019 and close at 12noon. It will be closed over the Christmas period. The service will reopen on the 2nd January 2020 at 8.30am.

Waste and Recycling Collection Services

Recycling and Refuse collections will be two days late during the Christmas period this year. If your collection day falls on:-

• Wednesday, 25th December 2019 it will be collected on Friday, 27th December 2019
• Thursday, 26th December 2019 it will be collected on Saturday, 28th December 2019
• Friday, 27th December 2019 it will be collected on Sunday, 29th December 2019


Recycling and Refuse collections will be one day late during the New Year period.  If your collection day falls on:-

• Wednesday, 1st January 2020 it will be collected on Thursday, 2nd January 2020
• Thursday, 2nd January 2020 it will be collected on Friday, 3rd January 2020
• Friday, 3rd January 2020 it will be collected on Saturday, 4th January 2020
• From Monday, 6th January 2020 all collections will return to normal

Nappy and Hygiene Collection Service

Nappy and Hygiene sacks will be collected from the front of your property on:-

• Friday, 20th December 2019
• There will be no collection made on Friday, 27th December 2019
• The Nappy and Hygiene collection due to take place on Friday, 3rd January 2020 will take place on Saturday, 4th January 2020.
• Normal weekly Nappy and Hygiene collections will resume on Friday, 10th January 2020

Recycle Your Christmas Tree

The Council’s Waste Department will be providing a service to collect and recycle your Christmas Tree from Monday, 6th January 2020. Please contact C2BG on 01495 311556 to register your details or please register on My Council Services section on the council’s website at www.blaenau-gwent.gov.uk to confirm a collection day for your Christmas Tree.

Household Waste and Recycling Centre, New Vale Civic Amenity Site

New Vale Civic Amenity Site will be open during the Christmas and New Year period between the hours of 10am and 4.30pm [Monday – Sunday] for residents to dispose of waste material. The site will be closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day only.

Additional Information for Christmas:

• Please recycle plain greetings cards only.  We are unable to accept Christmas cards with glitter or attachments such as bows, pom poms, beads etc. as part of our recycling collection and will need to be placed in your black bags;

• Any polystyrene will need to be placed in your black bags for collection;

• Can we just remind all residents that all black bag waste allowances, either four black bags or one wheeled bin, remain in place over the festive period. We will not collect any excess waste to the side or on top of your bin or which exceed the four black bag allowance;

• Residents are able to take any excess black bag waste to New Vale but please make sure that all the recycling has been removed prior to visiting the site or you will be asked to sort your waste on site;

• Christmas wrapping paper is not recyclable, please place in a black bag/bin for your 3-weekly refuse collection.

• Additional cardboard should be flat packed and placed at the side of your recycling receptacles.

• Small electrical items, batteries and textiles can be collected weekly at the same time as your regular recycling collection. Please bag items and place either on top or to the side of your recycling receptacles.
